Latino Culture: Who are the Latinos?

This lesson plan is designed for students to learn exactly what and where Latin America is.
Essential questions:

  • Who are the Latinos?
  • Where is Latin America?

Thursday, June 13: Who are Latinos?
  • What does it mean to be Latino? (15 minutes)
    • Discussion:
      • Spanish, Hispanic, Latino, and specific countries (Mexican, etc.)
      • culture/ethnicity v. race
      • Latin America
      • What is America?
  • Where is Latin America? (15 minutes)
    • Brief overview, including environment, geography, populations, etc
  • Activity: Create a map of Latin America (including USA due to high population of Latin Americans) (30 minutes)
    • Determine and assign roles
    • Use a reference map
    • Use large piece of paper and work as a team to create a map
    • Label the country and the capital
    • Use brackets to mark the capital - reinforce and add clip around brackets for country-fact notecards
      • Explain that we'll add these throughout - whenever you learn a fact about a country, write it on a notecard and add it!  Include your name
  • Countries and Capitals of Spanish-speaking countries
